Jozani Forest Conservation Tour & Prison Island Tour

1 Day

Overview

Visit Prison Island, a one-of-a-kind location where you can learn about Zanzibar’s history. Jail Island is named after the jail that was established to keep Zanzibari inhabitants isolated from the island.

The prison was once held by an Arab to keep his rebellious slaves, but it was never used, and the island is now home to a tortoise sanctuary and a hotel. Prison Island is 20 minutes by boat from Stone Town and boasts amazing coral reefs for you to explore. Giant tortoises shuffle through the trees, showing the immense patience that comes with age. Some of these tortoises, believed to come from the Comoros Islands and Seychelles, are over 100 years old.

Following the visit to the tortoise sanctuary, you are free to explore the island. If you’re feeling active, you may walk one of the hiking routes, dive in the crystal blue seas in search of colourful tropical fish darting across the coral, or relax on the white beach. National Park of Jozani Chwaka Bay in Zanzibar Tanzania Jozani Forest, located in Zanzibar’s south, is the island’s largest mature forest region. You will be transported there by automobile, and a guide will lead you through the historic hardwood forest and mangrove marshes. It is also home to the Red Colobus monkeys, which are unique to Zanzibar. At the end of the tour, there will be a boardwalk through the mangrove swamp as well as a visit to the large turtle sanctuary.
