Overview
Kiwengwa Caves are located in the Kiwengwa Pongwe Forest Reserve, situated between Kiwengwa and Pongwe on the east coast of Unguja, 20 km from Zanzibar Town.
These caves are part of the ancient history of Zanzibar Island. Locals would visit the caves to worship their ancestors, bringing gifts to the holy stones. One of these caves is Mchekeni Coral Cave, which has been developed with a concrete path for entry. A reception center has been built, and rangers are available daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
Biodiversity spot in Kiwengwa Caves The reserve is an important biodiversity spot in the coral rag zone, rich in both faunal and floral species such as the red colobus monkey, Aders’s duiker, Sykes’s monkey, blue monkeys, Sunni antelope, and several species of snakes.
A café and a souvenir shop were built but are not yet operational. Torches are provided by the rangers, but if you have a torch or headlamp, bring your own as well.
